POCKET CART A variation
on the empty cart by Valerie Arcement Pattern: 6"
empty cart 8"
empty cart This pattern creates an empty flower cart
with a pocket to hold flowers. 1. Cut pattern out
and cut apart on section lines. 2. Cut Section D in the same
fabric used for the cart (not background fabric). 3. Cut a
piece of background fabric 8½ by 8½ inches (or 6½ by 6½ if using the 6" pattern).
Call this Section E. 4. Foundation piece each section being
sure to leave a generous ¼- to ½-inch seam allowance on the outside edges of the
block. Cut each inner seam allowance to a scant ¼ inch as you sew. DO NOT remove
the pattern paper. 5. When each section is finished, use the
rotary cutter to cut a ¼-inch seam allowance on all sides and press seams flat
with iron. Sew the cart sections together and press. 6. Now,
sew the second Section D to the cart section (A, B and C joined), with the right
sides facing. Lay these joined sections down, right side up, and press the seam
allowance toward Section D. Fold Section D behind the cart assembly and press
again. Trim the uneven angled edges flush with the edges of the block (this includes
the ¼-inch seam allowance). Press. 7. Lay the finished cart
section on Section E, the background square, lining up the bottom corners. Flip
the cart up so the cart and background are right side to right side. Sew in from
the side seams along the A-D seam on both sides, stopping 1/8 inch past the edge
of the cart and backstitch. (See illustration below.) 8. Flip
the cart back down and press the seam toward the cart. Now you can remove the
paper, or wait until you have added the border. After adding the
border, batt and backing, you may quilt around the cart and wheel, but do not
quilt inside the cart or you will loose the pocket. When finished, add small artificial
flowers to the cart and change them with the season. You may use hot glue to glue
them in place if you wish.
